3. Porn is adultery. Yeah, I said this earlier, but this is a list of reasons why porn damages you, and God hates adultery. There’s nothing about adultery that “keeps you pure.” Sure, you might not be sleeping with your girlfriend, and that’s how you’ve justified porn as your necessary evil. But try that explanation when you’re driving a hundred miles an hour and you get pulled over. “Officer, yes, I was going a hundred, but at least I wasn’t driving in the wrong lane!” Yes, driving in the wrong lane endangers lives instantly, but eventually someone driving a hundred miles an hour is going to hurt himself and others. Otherwise, why would it be against the law? And adultery is against God’s law.

When you watch porn, it puts you in danger because it distances you from God and creates a secret sin in your life that can damage your relationship with your future wife as well. And just like getting caught by the police, you do have to make an appearance in God’s court and give an accounting for what you’ve done. Calling porn “almost sex” is a technicality at best. Make no mistake, porn is sex for the people that are in it and for you if you’re viewing it. And that’s the opposite of staying pure.

The M Word

Now to the topic that’s incredibly hands-on. That’s right, the M word. Tons of books and articles quote the saying that 98 percent of men admit to masturbation, and the other 2 percent are lying. The fact is that many young Christian men cling to masturbation as their purity release valve; without masturbation they would ultimately slip up with their girlfriend, and they’re both trying to stay pure. But here’s the problem: remember what Jesus said in Matthew 5:27–28? If you even think about a woman in a sexual way, that’s adultery. So is it possible to masturbate without thinking about any woman, sex act, or body part? In theory, maybe— once or twice perhaps—but I majorly doubt it could be done on a consistent basis. And as we’ve established already, thinking about a woman in a sexual way is adultery, and masturbation adds your own personal and physical twist to your secret thought life. And laziness, just like porn, is a huge factor either causing masturbation or growing out of masturbation. Didn’t you pay attention in the porn section?
